Professor Mary Bousted is an honorary Professor in the Centre for Teachers and Teacher Research at the Institute of Education. She began her career as an English teacher and as a lecturer training teachers in 3 universities. Throughout her career, she has campaigned to improve teachers’ working lives, remaining a strong advocate for effective education policy.
She was formerly the Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), the largest education union in Europe with over five hundred thousand members. Before this, she was also the General Secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.
In both these roles, she represented the teaching profession to various international and national stakeholders, the government and employers. In her book Support Not Surveillance (2022) she explores potential resolutions to the teacher retention crisis.
